Planted my first ginger

I planted a piece of ginger in the morning today. The piece had a budding eye. I planted it only half an inch deep.

I did some research after I planted it. Yes - after. Doesn't it make sense!?

Gingers should be planted 2 inches deep into the soil. They don't like direct sunlight. Need rich soil. Moist but not soggy. Can't stand strong wind as well.

Harvest: 8-10 months. I need lots of patience.

My Sweet 100: Day 112

Cherry blossom. Cherry tomato blossom.

They all are still green but cherry tomatoes are everywhere. The current weather conditions are simply the best for cherry tomatoes. Twenty something degree Celsius in temperature. Good sunlight most of the time. Humidity around 70%.

Today, I saw an unripe and green cherry tomato which fell off from the branch and sat on the balcony floor. It was the size of a bean. I picked it up, washed it, and put it in my mouth. Sour. Very sour. Never eat green cherry tomatoes.

My Sweet 100: Day 105

It's been raining non-stop for the past week. Cloudy too. Yet, very few leaves got rotten because of the rain. The cherry tomatoes continue to grow as well. They are still green though.

The two plants have started to grow like crazy. Especially the branches. They are extending out beyond the reach of my hands. They grow vertically up as well as horizontally.

When some branches have reached the ceiling, it seems to me that other branches got notified of the vertical limit and detoured to grow horizontally instead. Amazing mother nature, huh?

Looking forward to eating my first home-grown cherry tomatoes next week.

久違了的杜雯惠

很久沒有聽杜雯惠的聲音了。多年前聽她在港台的人間定格。節目停播後就沒有再聽到她的聲音了。

剛剛在DBC的大戲台再次聽到她的節目,很驚喜。

My Sweet 100: Day 98 - The day has come. Finally.

Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

Before the 100th day, the younger plant has finally set fruit!

All the previous speculations, worries, anxiety... become unnecessary and stupid when I saw some round little green balls hanging down from where the flowers used to be.

This year, the fall has arrived earlier than usual. The weather has gotten a lot cooler than previous years. The temperature ranges from 24 to 29 degree Celsius. It's the perfect temperature for cherry tomatoes to grow. The relative humidity is 60% - 85%. This is simply the best time!

The older plant is taller than me now. Yet, there's no sign of setting fruit.

The younger one has at least 4 fruits, at least that's what I have found. The branches that receive the most sunlight have more fruits. They are still very small. Green. The biggest one has a diameter of 8mm - roughly. I am very excited!!!!

Both plants grow more vigorously when they get taller. There are more branches in the upper part than the lower part. Their overall shape is like an inverted pyramid. They are top heavy - as said by one of the gardeners on YouTube.

I did not do any serious artificial pollination although I once tried desperately with a pair of scissors. However, the fruits are definitely not the result of it. I am sure.

I have also changed one strategy recently. I used to get rid of suckers as soon as I saw them emerging. But since 1-2 weeks ago, I have decided to let them grow. I think it's helpful. Leaves are like solar-cells. The more solar cells you have, the more solar energy you can absorb. With solar energy, photosynthesis makes more food - glucose - for the plants and most importantly for the little cherry tomatoes!

One can only connect the dots - looking backwards. As said by Steve Jobs.
